The film is exponentially better the entire time he's not in it, most of the meat of the film. I won't say he was the worst actor to play the role. I must say that the negative reviews were absolutely right - his performance is hard to watch it is so affected and bizarre. It prevents them from being swept up by the thrilling, supernatural possibilities. Overall then a fairly bland and dull version of a famous story and a very weak interpretation of famous characters.
However, I've always thought of him more as a supporting character actor and I don't think he carried the lead role as well as it needed to be carried.
